RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT

Looking for more authentic home types for a new residential and commercial town center in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia the client requested a design guidelines document that would reflect traditional buildings already common to the locale. The document will allow various chosen architects to create distinctive homes with the integrity of form and detailing of specific historic examples, eliminating a homogenizing of styling so common with such developments. An emphasis on traditional detailing, with expressive profiles, will encourage a depth of shadow and delight desired by the developer.

The documents describe 5 various building types through the analysis of form, window and door types, architectural detailing, porch types, chimney types and locations, proportions, general materials and colors. Land use guidelines describe various unique housing groups within the development to ensure variation.
