A dark, simple cottage located in one of Charlotte’s historic neighborhoods lacked natural light, architectural character and sufficient headroom on the upper floor. It had been poorly renovated prior to this client’s purchase of the property. The new owners desired a new kitchen, open plan, more functional second level and a new outdoor living space. The Architect chose a form that, with the use of shed dormers, allowed maximum space under the steeply pitched main roofs. This form also minimizes the scale of the structure, located on a quiet street with modest post-war dwellings.
